Visit With Ruby & Bob

My meeting ended around noon yesterday, so I decided to make a trip across Florida and visit with my great aunt & uncle who live over by Naples.  The drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Naples was along Alligator Alley, though I didn't see any!

Robert & Ruby (Lambertson) Walsh, 11 Feb 2012
We had a good visit for a few hours.  I was able to catch them up with the latest family news, and they share a lot about how their lives are going.  Both are in excellent health - Bob is 89 years old and Ruby is 85.

Listening to Ruby talk reminds me so much of my grandmother.  They shared memories of how they met, how and when they were married (1944) and Bob shared some stories about his World War II experiences.  Bob shared some letters from friends of his that are sail boating around the world and showed me the nice book on WWII aircraft that his son, Mike had bought him.  Bob was trained on the B-25 bomber.

I learned that they met because Ruby and several of her girlfriends used to like to go dancing at a place in Alexandria, and though the distance between Elwood and Alexandria is less than ten miles - none of her friends had a car.  Bob and a few of his friends had a car, and they were talked into driving Ruby and the other girls to the dance.  Ruby was the last girl that Bob took him, and that's how they struck up a conversation.  Bob, being older than Ruby, didn't really know her in high school - and Bob grew up on the south side of Elwood, Ruby on the north.  Bob's care was a 1937 Buick.

When Bob got around to asking Ruby out on a date, her older sister, Bonnie (my grandmother) was tasked with trying to find out everything about Bob's reputation.  Ruby said that the only thing Bonnie could find out that was negative was that Bob liked to drive his car "really fast."  Bonnie had to loan Ruby a pair of shoes to wear on the dress and make her look a bit older.

Fast-forwarding to when they got married, Bob had already joined the service (Army Air Corps) and had been sent from Texas to college at Butler University in Indianapolis.  He would hitchhike from Butler up to Elwood, and the first weekend in May, Bob and Ruby were married.  They went with their parents to the preacher's house and were married on a Saturday, with Bob in full uniform.  Ruby had to obtain permission from the school to get married.  She was married on Saturday, and went back to school the next Monday.  Later, she followed Bob down to San Antonio and Uvalde, Texas as well as other training spots.  When the war ended, Bob was in Enid, Oklahoma.

I found out a lot about Ruby's parents, Clemon and June (Gilliland) Lambertson, during my conversation and cleared up a mystery.  The mystery was why the family had moved from Elwood in Madison County to up near Greentown in Howard County during the 1940-41 period.  I knew that Clemon's parents lived up there, and had assumed that was the reason for the move.  While that was true, Ruby also added that the major reason for the move was that "dad (Clemon) wanted to have a garden."  He apparently loved to garden, and had about 3 acres to grow tomatoes, etc.  I learned that grandma June canned all types of vegetables.

Apparently, I get my gardening instincts naturally from both sides of the family, though to be fair I grow vegetables as a hobby, not a necessity.  I would imagine during that time period it was more of a necessity than a pleasure.

Bob stated that they lived near Phlox, Indiana which is Union Township, Howard County.  This fits with the other information I have about the Lambertson land in Howard County - and another avenue for later research.  During the two years or so they lived in Howard County, Clemon continued to drive back to Elwood to work for the Sellers cabinet factory.  Ruby told me how that was a big change for them because she had to ride the bus to school in Greentown.  Back then, families only had one car and her dad had to take it to work.

Eventually, this move proved to be a drain on the family finances and they moved back to Elwood, but in a different house.  My research into city directories in Elwood seems to confirm this.

Ruby shared that her mother, June, worked at the cannery with the women and loved it.  Bob thought that the cannery was near Point Isabel.  They also mentioned that the family may have lived just north of Elwood at one point after moving from Howard county.  Ruby's dad worked at Sellers and when I asked about painting, she stated that he did some painting and hanging of wallpaper, but not as a business.  Bob told the story about how Clemon was supposed to help show him how to hang ceiling wallpaper one time when they were just married, but Clemon had a hernia operation and had to just "tell him" how to do - he chuckled at the story.

Bob shared about his experiences working with his dad's welding shop and told me about where certain businesses used to be located in Elwood.  His mind is sharp and it's hard to realize that he's not still living in that town, as familiar as he is with it.

We talked a lot about their daughter, Vickie, and the struggles she went through with her health - all of the transplants, doctors, etc.  It was obvious that they are still hurting and yet very proud of Vickie's strength.  They showed me pictures of the church in where Vickie's husband was the pastor and the Christmas decorations that Vickie was in charge of.  They also told me how they would get up early and drive across the state (two hours) to attend church with them.

I didn't write anything down or record the "interview", just allowed them to talk and share their stories.  I hope I remembered it all.  Since I found out that Bob likes to correspond, I think I will start writing some letters and ask even more questions.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Clemon Beals Lambertson (1898-1994)

Clemon & June (Gilliland) Lambertson
Clemon Beals Lambertson (1898-1994) was my maternal great-grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical facts I have discovered about him.

1. Vital records

     1.1. Birth certificate

Clemon was born October 27, 1898 in Cicero, Hamilton County, Indiana1. The State of Indiana began requiring births be recorded in 1907.  However, many counties have records going back to 1880.  The W.P.A. index compiled for Hamilton County did not list a birth for Clemon.

          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper

If Clemon's birth was recorded in a local newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.  The Hamilton East Public Library has local newspapers going back to 1837 on microfilm.  This will be a research item on my next trip there.

          1.1.2. Bible record

I believe that cousin Larry has the Lambertson family Bible, will need to contact him to see if the births were recorded in it.

          1.1.3. Baptismal record

The family was associated with the West Grove Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quaker) in Hamilton County, Indiana. The society does not believe in infant baptism.

          1.1.4. Adoption record

There is no indication that Clemon was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage license

Clemon was married on June 28, 1917 in Monroe County, Indiana to June Kirk Gilliland2. I didn't realize that I didn't have a copy of their marriage license.  It is recorded in Book 16, page 230, according to an index.  Have added this to my "to-do" list of research.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

Will need to search out mentions of their wedding in local Bloomington, as well as Noblesville newspapers on my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

Will need to search out mention of their anniversary in the local newspapers, particularly Elwood.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, though a search of court records has not been completed.

     1.3. Death certificate

Clemon died March 18, 1994 in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana1. However, I have not yet obtained a copy of his death certificate from the Madison County Health Department.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

Clemon's obituary appeared in the March 20, 1994 edition of the Anderson Herald-Bulletin and the March 21, 1994 edition of the Tipton Tribune.  I need to see what other local papers might have carried it, including Elwood Call-Leader and Alexandria Times-Tribune.

          1.3.2. Funeral home record

Clemon's funeral was conducted at the Guilkey and Herider Mortuary in Anderson, Indiana.  I have not yet contacted them regarding record of the funeral cost, who paid, etc.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

Clemon's tombstone in the Elwood City Cemetery has been photographed.  It lists him as "Father"  Clemon B. 1898-1994, and his first wife, "Mother" June K. 1898-1951 is also listed3.

2. Census records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

On April 10, 1930, Clemon was enumerated in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana4, as Clemon Lambertson, married laborer in a cabinet factory, aged 31, born in Indiana.  His father and mother were both listed as born in Indiana.  He could read and write and spoke English.  He owned his home, valued at $1500, and owned a radio.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 14, 1920, Clemon was enumerated in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Duck Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana5, as Clemon Lambertson, married carmeler in a cabinet factory, aged 21, born in Indiana.  His father and mother were both listed as born in Indiana.  He could read and write and spoke English.  He rented his home.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On April 23, 1910, Clemon was enumerated in the town of Cicero, Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana6, in the household of his father, Charles Lambertson.  He is listed as Clemon B., age 11, attended school within the year, born in Indiana.  Both of his parents are listed as being born in Indiana.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

On June 16, 1900, Clemon was enumerated in Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana7, in the household of his grandfather, Carey Lambertson.  He is listed as Clemon, age 1, born in Indiana.  His father is listed as being born in Ohio, mother in Indiana.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agriculture Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what information might come to light.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Clemon registered for the draft during World War I on September 12, 19188.  He was listed as slender build with brown hair and brown eyes.  The card lists him as Clemon Beals Lambertson living at 615 North 18th Street, Elwood, Indiana.  His occupation was a painter at Sellers & Sons.

      3.2. Pension Records

Not applicable, as I have no evidence that Clemon ever served in the military.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly researched in Madison County, Indiana and Howard County, Indiana.  Clemon spent most of his adult life in Madison County, though briefly lived in Howard County during World War II period.

4.2. Plat Map / County map

Madison County published a plat map in 1880, 1891, 1893, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940 that may be relevant to my search on the Lambertson family.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available for Clemon to search include court records and will and probate records, as well as city directories for Anderson, Indiana.
A search of city directories in Elwood, Indiana shows Clemon at the following addresses:
       1906 North F Street - 1924, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1931/2, 1933, 1935, 1938.

The back side of the photograph is a postcard, not mailed but appears to be address to my maternal great uncle, Harold LAMBERTSON.

GeneaLeaks

I'm waiting for the latest release of the secret documents. No, not the latest from WikiLeaks, but instead from GeneaLeaks, the masterminds of exposing family secrets.

What I'm hoping they'll release :

  • The truth about what happened to Albert MOULTON, my paternal 3rd-great grandfather, who supposedly disappeared during the California Gold Rush (and abandoned his family back East).
  • Documents relating to the Swiss origins of my HALEY family, including the original spelling of the surname.
  • Positive proof that Jacob LEMASTERS (1770-1852) of Mason County, Virginia and Shelby County, Ohio was a descendant of Abraham LEMASTER (bef1639-1722) of Charles County, Maryland.
These are just a few of the most highly anticipated documents expected to be exposed soon.

Rumor has it that all of these documents, and many more, have been stored away in an unknown location.  Undisclosed sources have mentioned Washington, D.C., Salt Lake City and the North Pole as possible locations.
