Easter Greetings (1923)

Postmark: Portland, Indiana August 27, 1923

Mrs. Clarence Stuber
Spencerville, Ohio  R.R. # 5

Portland

Dear Children

Had quite a rain this morning girls are washing.  Will look for you folks Thurs.  Well Mildred says she is going home with Vera from the fair so Grandma can't say no.  She says she wants to play with the pups.  Will you bring that dish that you cook or bake in.  We will bake macroni [sic].

---
This postcard, sent to my paternal great-aunt Vera (HALEY) STUBER, was written by her mother, Cora Belle (METZNER) HALEY.  Why an Easter card was postmarked in August, I have no idea.

The fair mentioned would be the Jay County fair.  Mildred would be Mildred MILLER, daughter of Galen and Mary (HALEY) MILLER, Vera's sister.

An interesting view into the lives of my ancestors in 1923.

Will Abstract of Thomas McCool (1797-1867): Warrick County, Indiana

Located this will abstract record of Corinne's maternal 5th-great grandfather, Thomas McCOOL, in Warrick County, Indiana on my recent trip.

Thomas McCool       April 11, 1867    April 23, 1869   page 82-83

Heirs: John P. McCool, Jacob B. McCool, Margaret Hargrave.  Witnesses: W.S. Harpole and A.J. Milller

Source: Abstracts Warrick County, Indiana, Will Book I 1831-1859 Will Book 2 Feb. 1860-June 1885, Capt. Jacob Warrick Chapter, DAR, 1992, p. 8

---
Known children of Thomas are Jacob B., Nancy Ann, Margaret and John P.  Thomas had two wives, Martha "Patsey" SCALES (1807-1825) and Catherine ________.  At this point I've not identified for sure which wife was the mother of the children, though I'm leaning towards Martha.

Thomas was born December 20, 1797 in Virginia and died May 14, 1867 in Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana.  Prior to coming to Indiana, the family lived in Warren County, Kentucky.  Thomas is buried in the Harpole Cemetery, Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana.  Note the Harpole name as a witness, there may be a family connection.   Much research needs to be done on this line.

Will be writing letter today requesting a copy of his will record from Warrick County.

Research Updates: August 29, 2011

I was able to spend a few hours yesterday at the Willard Library in Evansville, Indiana and do some research.  This is a great regional library, with a lot of sources that extend outside of their geographic area.  While my main focus was on the the robbery of the New Harmony bank in 1925, I also located information relating to Eileen's and Corinne's lines.

  • Searched additional editions of the Evansville Journal from March 1925, looking for additional information on the robbery in New Harmony that Harry Pierpont's gang was involved with.  Did not find anything other than what the library had already provided.
  • Found information in abstracts of Tagliche Evansville Union 1865-1885 that included information regarding the Sauer, Ritt, Damm, and Schafer lines.  Once I determine how they are related to Corinne's lines, will request copies of the actual newspaper items.  All of which are published in German script!
  • Located record of abstracts of Warrick County, Indiana Will Book I 1831-1859 and Will Book II Feb. 1860-June 1885.  In this work, located Corinne's ancestor Thomas McCool.  Will now be able to request the copy of his will filled April 23, 1869.
  • Located the Divorce Record Index 1818-1941 Vanderburgh County Indiana and located several of Corinne's ancestors and relatives, some of whom had filed multiple times, including the Miller, Chivlare and Sauer families. Now there's a story there!
  • Found published Ledger of Civil War Appointments & Discharges from the Recorders Office of Wabash County, Indiana which had information about Eileen's ancestor, Thomas PEFLEY.  Nice find in a library over 200 miles from home.
  • Made copies from Lagro Township Cemeteries Wabash County Indiana for records of Eileen's Duffey, Lewis, Sills & Pefley ancestors.
For just a few hours of research, it turned out to be a very productive day in a really nice, historic library.  If you ever have an opportunity to research there, I would highly recommend it.

This is a ‘snippet’ from Google books.  Will have to see if I can locate this publication through inter-library loan.

Some interesting bits of information in this article.  Was Nehersta previously married to someone named Miller?  It would appear so.  Apparently, she was living in Columbus, Ohio at the time as well.  More facts to research and mysteries to uncover.

Nehersta Edith PIERCE was born January 4, 1910 in Madison County, Indiana.  She died September 2, 1979 in Los Angeles, California and is buried in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.  She was the half-sister to my great-grandmother, Edna Muriel (PIERCE) WRIGHT.
