Cousin Bait : The First Week

It's been one week since I started my "cousin bait" posts entitled "On This Day..."  As mentioned previously, the purpose of these posts is to generate leads, discussion and hopefully make some connections with new cousins.

Though these posts make my blog look a bit odd, they are also revealing to me how much more information I need to document.

Though it's way to early to tell if these will be successful, I did receive three nibbles this week - though not sure if they were directly related to these posts.  Instead of receiving comments directly on the posts, I received emails and comments on other older posts relating to the surname, which lead me to believe that the "On This Day..." post led to a search of the blog.  If so, that would make my efforts worth it.

I made contact with a distant cousin on the HECK line - whose line comes through Nicholas HECK (1811-1891), son of Godfrey.  My direct line is through Mary (HECK) SHAW (1803-1890), Nicholas' older sister.  We are in the beginning stages of trading information.

I also made contact with a distant cousin on the PIERCE line - whose line comes through Albert Orlando PIERCE (1839-1920), son of Francis.  My direct line is through Edmund G. PIERCE (1837-1875), Albert's older brother.

Another comment came from a distant cousin on the ALLEN line - whose line comes through John BARKER (1771-1849), son of Hannah Allen Barker.  My direct line is through Abner BARKER (1768-    ), John's older brother.

So far, the fishing is fine...

1893-94 Directory Finds : Madison County, Indiana

Spent the early part of today researching Knight & Co.'s Elwood, Alexandria, In and Madison County Biennial Directory, 1893-1894 as found online at Internet Archive.  I was able to add some occupational and residency data to my Rootsmagic database.

Found information regarding the following families: Cochran, King, Lyst, Shaw, Sigler and Snively and added their residency and occupational information to my database.

In the town of Elwood, I found Dr. Daniel SIGLER listed as the President of the local board of education.  His residence was at 305 South Anderson Street.  He was also listed as the President of the Elwood Natural Gas and Oil Company, which had offices at 513 South Anderson.  Daniel was the husband of my maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Minerva PIERCE.   His son Bert V, was also listed in the directory, though I have his death occurring December 20, 1892 in Elwood.

Also in Elwood, I found John LYST, listed as a brick contractor, residence and business both at 2021 Main Street.  John was the husband of my maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Sarah Wilson LAMBERTSON.

Also in Elwood, I found Henry H. SNIVELY, seller of drugs, watches, clocks, jewelry and musical instruments, business at 112 South Anderson, residence at  1415 South E. Street.  Henry was a maternal 1st cousin 4 times removed, the son of Samuel and Mary S. (LAMBERTSON) SNIVELY.

The town of Frankton held several relatives of the King family, including a curious listing for Elizabeth KING, widow.  I believe this refers to my maternal 3rd-great grandmother, Elizabeth (SHAW) KING, widow of Daniel.  However, by the time of this directory she had been married for several years to William COCHRAN, also listed in the directory as a carpenter living in Frankton.  Perhaps there is another Elizabeth, or they were still references to her as the "widow" King long after her remarriage.

Also in Frankton, I found David KING, listed as a drayman; Benjamin KING, listed as a carpenter; and Frank M. KING, also listed as a carpenter.  These were ones I could identify as relatives.

I'm enjoying exploring the works digitized in the Internet Archive and hope to find more mentions of my relatives.

Daniel King (1820-1876)

Daniel KING (1820-1876) was my maternal third great-grandfather. The ethnic origins of the KING line are unknown at this time.

The following facts about Daniel's life are known:
  • Birth: In the 1850 census, Daniel is listed as aged 29, born in Tennessee. In the 1860 census, Daniel is listed as aged 39, born in Indiana. In the 1870 census, Daniel is listed as aged 50, born in Ohio.  His tombstone lists his age as 55 years, 5 months and 21 days.  With a death date of February 24, 1876, I've calculated his birth as September 3, 1820.
  • Marriage: Daniel married Elizabeth SHAW, daughter of William and Mary (HECK) SHAW on December 5, 1847 in Madison County, Indiana.  Madison County is a burned county, and the state database of marriages prior to 1850 does not list their marriage.
  • Census: In 1850, Daniel was head of household in Jackson Township, Madison County, Indiana.  His occupation was listed as farmer, and the value of real estate was $400.
  • Census: In 1860, Daniel was head of household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  His occupation was listed as farmer, and the value of real estate was $4000, and his personal estate was valued at $1375.
  • Census: In 1870, Daniel was head of household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  His occupation was listed as farmer, and the value of real estate was $14,500, and his personal estate was valued at $6031.
  • Death: Daniel died February 24, 1876 and is buried in the Howard Cemetery, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana.  A memorial page is listed at FindAGrave
The following facts need further research and/or documentation to complete my research:
  • Birth: Need to be better able to nail down Daniel's place of birth.  Older brother, Thomas (b. 1817) and younger brother, George (b. 1823) both report being born in Ohio, so where did the Tennessee birth come from in the 1850 census record?  The 1850 census also lists his wife as being born in Tennessee, when other records list her birthplace as Ohio as well.
  • Obituary: While there may not be an obituary available, I need to search out Anderson, Indiana newspapers to see if one is available.
  • Land Records: There are doubtless land records that need to be explored in Madison County, Indiana that will flesh out the details of Daniel's life.

Ahnentafel # 100: William KING (c1790-1869); North Carolina>Wabash Co.,IN
