Mom's March Gardening Tip - Potatoes

People always ask us about how to grow potatoes since we've been successful doing so.   We've grown Russet, Yukon, Red Norland, Red Pontiac, Kennebec, Irish, and Superior.   We have narrowed down the type to Kennebec (because they store well), Yukon (they make delicious mash potatoes) and either Red Norland or Red Pontiac.   If I can find them, I will plan Superior which is a early season potato.

People have said to plant them on Good Friday but sometimes that's too early for planting as the soil is too wet.  We have found that the first week of Aprli is a good time.  Two weeks before we're ready to plant, we cut them into seed pieces.  These pieces can vary.  Be sure that there is at least one good "eye" in each seed piece.  We let them  cure for a couple of weeks to make sure they have formed a good "eye".

We use the trench method of planting potatoes which involves digging a shallow trench, about 6" deep and placing the seed potatoes in the trench, eyes facing up. You then cover the potatoes with a couple of inches of soil. As the potato plant grows, soil is continually hilled up along the sides of the plants. This keeps the soil around the developing tubers loose and keeps the surface tubers from being exposed to sunlight, which will turn them green and somewhat toxic. Hill soil whenever the plants reach about 4-6" in height. You can stop tilling when the plants begin to flower.  Space rows 24 to 36 inches apart. The 24 inch spacing is often beneficial because the plants shade the soil and prevent high soil temperatures that inhibit tuber development.

We sprinkle Preen over the soil after they have been planted.  Mulch is usually beneficial in growing potatoes. After the potato plants have emerged mulch can be applied to conserve moisture, help keep down weeds and cool the soil.
Harvest potatoes after the vines have died. Handle as gently as possible during harvest. Because the tubers develop 4 to 6 inches beneath the soil surface, a shovel or spading fork is a useful tool for digging potatoes.
They keep in the garage or basement for several weeks in their natural dormancy. Store over the winter in a dark room at a temperature between 38° and 40°F with high humidity.  I have read to store them in a paper sack.   Do not refrigerate potatoes or store them with onions.

Gardening has been such a big part of the family tradition that I thought I'd better get as much information written down from mom and dad as soon as possible to pass on.

More March Garden Tips

More March Garden Tips from mom:

March weather can be a mixed bag.   Work out side on sunny days but don't rush the season.  If you spaded the garden last fall and left it rough, rake out a small area to plant onion sets for green onions and a row or two of radishes.   These will provide some fresh produce in just a few weeks.  A few herbs and vegetables can be sown directly intp the garden as soon as the soil can be worked.  Do not destroy the soil by working it when it is too wet.   Plant rhubarb and asparagus.   Plant or sow plants or seeds of spinanch, chives, dill, mint, oregano, and thyme.   Plant peas.  Plant hardy perennial plants.

March Garden Tips

Gardening has been such a big part of the family tradition that I thought I'd better get as much information written down from mom and dad as possible to pass on.

If you haven't done so already, prune the grapes.   I usually do them around President's Day.  Plant pansies in ground or pots.  Seed annuals indoors.  Apply dormant spray to fruit trees before new growth appears.   Prune winter-damaged hedges.   Trim more at top than bottom to allow light to reach lower branches.  Prune young trees before they leaf out.   Remove dead and crossing branches.   Clean up and mulch all existing beds.  Trim yews, junipers, arborvitae, and hemlock.   When weather premits, mow lawn short to remove dead grass.  Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses before new growth appears.  Remove all of the small, weak canes on raspberries. Cut back the lateral branches to 18 inches.

William Hall household, 1850 U.S. census, population schedule, Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio, USA, District 178, dwelling 305, family 305; National Archives micropublication M432, roll 694.

Correspondence will a researcher of the HALL family of Highland County, Ohio has led me to research more about Susanna (WRIGHT) HALL OGDEN, daughter of George and Elizabeth (ROBINS) WRIGHT.  She was the younger sister of my maternal 4x great-grandfather, John WRIGHT.

Susanna was born May 21, 1819 in Brown County, Ohio1,2.  On October 29, 1840 in Brown County, Ohio, she married William Riley HALL1,2,3, son of Patrick and Mary (REESE) HALL.

On September 13, 1850, William and Susanna were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio4.  William's occupation was that of a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1000.  He was aged 32 and born in Ohio. Wife Susanna was listed as aged 31, also born in Ohio.  Living in the household with them is an unidentified Edmund Hesler, age 4, born in Ohio.

Susanna and William were living next door to William's brother, John Reese Hall and his wife Lucrieta.  The Alexander Bratten family was their other neighbor.

William died May 22, 1855 and is buried in the Hall cemetery, Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio3.  Susanna married secondly to Sidney Ogden.

On June 25, 1860, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio5.  Sidney's occupation was that of a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1800 and a personal estate valued at $ 285.  He was aged 46 and born in New York.  Wife Susan was listed as age 41, born in Ohio.  Living in the household were two children of Sidney's first marriage, Samantha, aged 15 and John, aged 8, both born in Ohio.  Also in the household were a servant, Elizabeth Hutchens [?] and a farm laborer, John Webber [?].  Both of their names were very hard to read.

Living next door to them was a Samuel and Rebecca WARDLOW and a widowed Mary HALL.  Not sure of the relationships, but the Wright and Wardlow families were known to be related in Brown County.

On June 8, 1870, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio6.  Sidney's occupation was listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1080 and a personal estate valued at $ 261.  He was aged 56 and born in New York.  Wife Susan was listed as age 51, born in Ohio.

On June 10, 1880, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio7.  Sidney's occupation was listed as blacksmith.  He was born in New York and both of his parents were as well.  Wife Susan was listed as age 61, born in Ohio with both parents born in Pennsylvania.

To date I have not yet discovered the dates of death or burial place of Sidney and Susan.

Remember the SASE?

Remember the SASE?  That's Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) for those born in the era of email and text messages.  When I started doing family history and genealogy research back in the 1980s, letter writing was a key component of research, a way and means to receive information.

I used this neglected form of communication this week in an attempt to goad a distant cousin to provide me with some information.  The gentleman is upwards of 80 years old, a recent widow, and lives several states away.  I found his phone number through an internet search, and contacted him back in November.  The conversation was pleasant, he provided some information, and promised to stay in touch.

The cousin gave me his email address and I fired off a couple of quick emails, but no response.  Perhaps he's not on the computer as much as I am.  Phone calls are tricky, as I don't want to disturb him and also the information I'm looking for is somewhat sensitive - as he is a relative of my 'black sheep' family.  I don't want to jeopardize the connection.

So this week, I typed up an old-fashioned letter, attached printed copies of my emailed charts to him, and sent him a letter via U.S. mail.  I included a SASE, hoping for a reply.

I'm hoping for the best.

Garland Hancock at Moonsville School

A recent eBay listing was a real photo postcard (RPPC) of a Moonsville, Indiana school.  Handwritten on the back it stated that Garland Hancock was the teacher.  Circumstantial evidence leads me to believe that this Garland is the same as the one in my database.

Moonsville is an  unincorporated part of Richland Township in Madison County, Indiana.

Garland HANCOCK (1887-1922) married into my extended family when he married Cora E. GROENENDYKE on April 10, 1909 in Madison County, Indiana.  Cora (1890-1967) was the daughter of Thomas and Emily (SMITH) GROENENDYKE.

Garland was born July 1, 1887 in Richland Township, Madison County, Indiana and died June 1, 1922 in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.  He and Cora were the parents of three children: Donald T., Virgil G., and Maxine.

In my notes, I have that Garland attended Indiana University.  I need to research census records to see if his occupation was listed as a teacher.

The auction ended without a winning bid.

FindAGrave Success : John W. Poe

FindAGrave contributor Slimbeaux was able to photograph the tombstones of my maternal 5x great-grandparents, John W. POE (1781-1850) and Elizabeth (RAINS) POE (1789-1840).

Thanks to these photographs, I now have an exact date of death for Elizabeth.   In addition, I found a previously unknown daughter of the couple, Rebecca POE (1809-1838), who was also buried in the Poe Cemetery in Morgan County, Indiana.
