This record of the marriage of George I. Haley to Maggie M. Barr was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

I do not know yet of a connection between this particular George Haley and any of my other Haleys in Jay County. One clue I discovered was the the minister was a Society of Friends (Quaker) minister.  I believe he is the G.I. Haley in the 1900 census, living in Dunkirk, Jay County, with wife, Minnie.  I didn't find a close match in the 1880 census.

The demise of Saturday mail delivery is just another example of the changing times.  Old curmudgeon that I am, I enjoy receiving mail, whether it be a letter or a bill.  Though I can’t recall the last time someone wrote me a letter, I can say that I just recently sent a few.  

In the past week, I decided to write my aunts, uncles and parents and ask them to return in a SASE some basic family history questions.  While some of this has been told to me before, I wanted to take the opportunity to get them to write it down.  I plan to preserve their answers as part of the family history.  My plan is to send a few more letters like this throughout the year, asking general questions about family history that I wouldn’t know.  My memories of my grandparents for example, will be vastly different than that of my aunts and uncles. 

Perspective is everything in family history.

Indianapolis Thief Shoots Man, Who Catches Him In Attempt To Steal Automobile - Revolvers Stolen Here Thursday Night Are Recovered

The thief who robbed John Cook & Son's Hardware store of eleven revolvers and automatic pistols Thursday night, was captured at Indianapolis, near 8:00 o'clock Saturday night when he shot Edward Devine a contractor on the Circle, who caught the thief in the act of stealing his car.  The man gave his name as Harry L. Pierpont, age 19 of Indianapolis.

Pierpont confessed to the Indianapolis police that on Thursday he stole a car from New Jersey and Michigan streets in Indianapolis, and drove to Greencastle.  After robbing the Cook & Sons Hardware store of the revolvers, he drove to Terre Haute and then returned to Indianapolis, Friday night.  Back in Indianapolis he abandoned the automobile.  He has been dismissed from an insane asylum but shows no signs of insanity now.

Mr. Devine saw Pierpont attempting to start his car when he came out of his office on the Circle Saturday night with his wife.  He jumped in the car and caught Pierpont's arm which held a revolver and was pointed at Devine's waist and deflected the shot which struck him in the flesh of the left leg.  His wife attacked the bandit and helped hold him until the police arrived.  When caught Pierpont had four revolvers on him and a check for a parcel in the Terminal station check rooms which accounted for three more.  Although eleven revolvers are missing from Cook's store Pierpont said he only took nine.

He is held for shooting with intent to kill and vehicle taking by Indianapolis police.  He will also have a charge against him for burglary.

The revolvers are valued at more than $200 by John Cook, Jr., who investigated the robbery.  Insurance covers the loss, which will be about $80 for the four that are missing.

Cousin Harry Pierpont (1902-1934), later famous as the trigger man for the Dillinger gang, started his criminal career shortly after being struck on the head and suffering an injury.  This is the earliest mention I've found of his criminal career. Pearl was my paternal first cousin three times removed, the daughter of William F. Metzner and Mary F. Haley.  Before finding this return, I did not realize that her husband was a minister.  The minister who performed the ceremony was Pearl's older brother, John.

I do not yet know for sure how Nora ties into my Chew family.  I believe that she might be the Nora who was the daughter of Charles Alexander West Chew and Rebecca F. This record of the marriage of Russell James Hercules and Bertha Alberta LeMaster was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

Bertha was my paternal grand aunt, the daughter of Luman Cooper LeMaster and Barbara Isabel Wehrly.  I could not make out the full place of Russell's employer at first, but checking out his WWI Draft record, I knew he was a wood worker with the Starr Piano Company. I knew that he was from Richmond, and they lived there after their marriage.  Now with this record, I also have his parent's names.

This record of the marriage of Franklin Oliver Bittikofer and Ora Amanda Haley was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

Ora was my paternal great-grandaunt, the daughter of George Washington Haley and Mary Jane Sherick.  The return listed her birthplace as Fort Recovery, Ohio, while I had shown it as Jay County, Indiana in my database.  The Haley's were living in Seneca County, Ohio at the 1880 census, so they may have stopped in Fort Recovery before moving to Jay County.

The Frank Haley who witnessed the marriage was likely the bride's older brother.

I do not yet know how Cynthia fits into my Haley family in Jay County.  Obviously, she married into the family.  Initial searches on databases looking for a marriage of a Hern to Haley were unsuccessful.

I find it interesting that the license and return was taken out in Jay County, the groom lived in Adams County and the bride lived in Blackford County.

The name of the Clerk of the Jay Circuit court was terribly hard to read.  I was able to search Google and locate a record of John Alfred McDowell Adair in order to interpret his signature.

This record of the marriage of Ernest L. Chalfant and Edna A. Haley was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

Edna A. Haley was my paternal first cousin twice removed, the daughter of Andrew Frank Haley and Emma Catherine Leonard.  Before locating this record, I didn't have much biographical information, and had the marriage listed as taking place in Jay County, since that was where the license was from.  Without the return, I would not have known that the wedding took place in neighboring Adams County.

The minister who performed the ceremony was Rev. George David Ellsworth Haley, uncle of the bride.  The witnesses to the ceremony were the bride's brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Julia Haley.

Birth of Elizabeth Price (1683-1716) Northampton, Massachusetts

Several months ago, cousin Yvonne Demoskoff of Yvonne's Genealogy Blog responded to one of my "cousin bait" posts describing the events in my family history that occurred on August 12th.  Yvonne quickly responded that we shared a common ancestor, as Elizabeth Price (1683-1716) was her 8x-great grandmother.  Elizabeth was my 8x-great grandaunt, the daughter of Sarah Webb (1646-1704) and Robert Price.  I descend from Sarah Webb (1646-1704) and her first husband, Zechariah Field (1645-1674), through son John Field (1673-1718).

Yvonne's ancestor, Elizabeth Price (1683-1716) was taken captive during the raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts on February 29, 1704.  She was one of 109 captives.  Her mother, Sarah (Webb) Price (my ancestor) was killed during the raid.  According to Yvonne, Elizabeth was taken to New France where she later married in 1706 at Montreal to Jean Fourneau dit Brindamour.

After contacting me, Yvonne asked if I had any sources for the birth date for Elizabeth, which I showed in my database as occurring in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on August 12, 1683.  Unfortunately, I did not have sources for this information.  Much of the information I had obtained came from an excellent textbook "Captors and Captives: The 1704 French and Indian Raid on Deerfield" by Kevin Sweeney.   I found the book on Amazon.com and found it a fascinating read.

Sorting through my unfinished email business, I decided today to renew my search for records of Elizabeth's birth and I found her!  At Familysearch.org, I was able to access the vital records of the Town of Northampton, Massachusetts and browse them year by year, looking for Elizabeth.  Though hard to read, below is the image I located.
