Civil War Pension Index Card: William F. METZNER

Was finally able to get images to download from Footnote.com, perhaps my vent of frustration helped?  Nah.

This is the Civil War Pension Index card for William F. METZNER, my paternal 2nd-great granduncle.  This card was indexed at Footnote.com as William T. METZNER.  As you can see by the cursive script, sometimes "Fs" and "Ts" can appear similar.

The cool find for me on this card was that it gives his exact date of death and the location.  Although I probably had this fact somewhere, I only had the year in my Rootsmagic database.  Bryant, Indiana is in Jay County, where William and his wife Mary lived for a number of years.

I believe that I may have his Civil War pension in my files, will have to scan it and make sure I glean all the information that I can from it.  William was a private in Company E., 89th Regiment Indiana Infantry.

William was born January 6, 1844 in Licking County, Ohio, the son of John and Catherine (YOUNG) METZNER.  He was the brother of my ancestor, John Adam METZNER.  William married December 8, 1867 in Jay County, Indiana to Mary Ann HALEY, daughter of Sebastian and Lydia A. (RADER) HALEY.  They had eight children: John W., Irvin G., Amanda A., Pearl M., Barb M., Laura Belle, Lydia J., and Louetta Jane.  William's occupation was listed as farmer and furniture dealer in the census records.

I Should Have Taken French

Earlier this year, while my wife & I were shopping with my mother-in-law and the girls, we went to Elder Beerman nearby Kokomo.  There, my wife sampled various perfumes, and found one that she liked.  She gave me a copy of a marked card, telling me exactly what type of perfume it was.  Being the good husband, I dutifully placed the card in my wallet, sure that I would have the perfect birthday present in a few months.

Fast forward to today, one day before her birthday, when I (as always) had procrastinated and not purchased her birthday present.  Early morning I headed out to our Elder Beerman in Marion, sure that it would be a quick in and out.  I was wrong.

The perfume that she wanted was called Le Bateleur made by Dolce & Gabanna.  I went to the counter and was unable to find the perfume.  Asking the clerk if they carried that particular type, I was disappointed to learn that they did not.

Normally, panic mode would have sat in, but I knew that latter in the day we might be heading to Kokomo, which has a bigger Elder Beerman, so there was a chance I could still redeem myself.  Though I was not thrilled with the prospect of buying her present while she was there, at least I wouldn't be empty handed.

As today progressed, my mother-in-law wanted to buy my wife some shoes and make-up from Elder Beerman, so I returned for the second time in one day to the store.  It was not a good shopping day, as the store didn't have the type of Clinique that my wife needed either.  After a few phone calls, the store clerk managed to find out that the Anderson store had a supply of the make up and we headed back on down the highway.

At the Anderson store, I panicked again as I couldn't find the Le Bateleur anywhere.  I finally asked the clerk, in front of my wife, if they carried this type - as all I could find was Dolce & Gabana's Light Blue.

The clerk tells me that Le Bateleur means "light blue" in French, so I bought the perfume.  Perhaps I have "sucker" written on my face. Of course, all of these perfumes are named in French, and I took German in high school and college. Anyway, my wife did like the perfume, so she seems happy.  However, I once again fell victim to a sales clerk, because if I would have checked it out I would have known that it didn't mean 'light blue'.  My French-speaking ancestors would have been horrified at my performance today.

BTW, I did look it up - seems that Le Bateleur means 'the magician' - Wikipedia has a nice write up about the Tarot card named after this phrase.

Footnote.com Frustrations

Decided to do some quick genealogy research this morning, before heading outside to work in the garage.  Checked out Footnote.com's Civil War Collection, and made a couple of quick finds on the pension index cards that I wanted to download, but no such luck.

Is it just me, or is their system overloaded due to the holiday weekend traffic?  Probably the latter, but still it is frustrating.  I guess I'm just too impatient!  I want it now, you know?

Just sent out a tweet to see if the problem is just my computer.  Misery loves company.

Where Does The Time Go?

Where does the time go?  This spring/summer seems to be busier than normal.  Perhaps I have too much on my plate.  I haven’t spent any time during the last month working on genealogy, and for the past 3 weeks or so – no new blog posts.  This, after building up a few subscribers and having new friends begin to post comments – then “poof”, I’ve fallen off the face of the Earth.

What have I been doing?  Between working on homework for my MBA classes, we underwent a remodel in our bathroom which had our house tore up.  Fortunately, it wasn’t too expensive and worked out just great but it added to the household stress.  However, that wasn’t the main thing that kept me busy – it was my new hobby (as if I needed another!) of going to auctions.

I had been to a few auctions as a kid with my folks – one of my early memories was of a personal property sale of my great uncles house, so I had a vague recollection of how they work. My folks always wanted to open an antique shop and have quite a good collection over the years.  A co-worker of mine works for a local auction house part-time and loves to hit the sales.  So the combination of history, memories and curiosity led me to start hitting the local sales over the last month or so.

I've managed to learn a bit about the psychology of the sales and "win" a few lots.  Lots of junk, mostly.  I did, however, manage to turn some of it into a profit at the town rummage.  Then there is the stuff that may end up on Ebay.

Somewhere in there I need to catch up on my research, answer the emails that have been ignored, and post some more "pre-loaded" and now "back-dated" posts about family milestones on the events that occurred in June that I might have missed.

Oh, and I still need to write another paper for class....

Of Apples and Such

Received a wonderful comment from Susan, regarding my paternal 6th-great grandfather, Samuel JEWETT.  It seems that Samuel shared my interest in gardening, as according to this website about his farm, he was the developer of the type of apple known as Jewett Red or "Nodhead", which is a dessert variety.

Apparently, the apple was named "Nodhead" after Samuel, who had a reputation for nodding his head while walking or talking.  Did a quick search online to find that this variety is not known outside of New England. Interesting.

Would love to see if I can locate a couple of these type of apple trees to plant in my backyard.  What an interesting way to have a connection with a long distant ancestor.

Miscellaneous:

Tuesday was always mom's day to buy groceries.  She and Phyllis Moody would always go into Alexandria on Tuesday's to buy them.

Revenge of the Census Lady

Received a return phone call this morning from the census lady, who was following up to my phone call from last night.  I told her that I had mailed in my census form on April 12th (I kept a copy).  She told me that they were told that if the forms were received by April 1st that households would receive a visit.  She told me that since I had mailed back the form, she would mark me as refused, for reason that I had already mailed back the form.  All was good.

Now, twelve hours later, I receive another call from her, apologizing that her supervisor has told her that she has to ask me the census questions or visit the house again.  Even though I had mailed in the form!

She told me that there were others on my street who had called her back & told her that they had mailed the form in as well, but that her supervisor was requiring a visit.

She wanted to read me the "confidentiality" statement.  I was polite, and told her that I understood that she was just doing her job, but that I didn't want to answer the questions that I had already answered.  I told her that I was more than familiar with my requirement, which I had already met and that I didn't want to bother with it.

I offered to give her a copy of the form, and she told me that she couldn't accept it, she would either need to ask me the questions or ask a proxy (ie. neighbor) the questions.  I ended the call by restating my position that she would just have to do that.

One Thing Leads To Another

Robyn from Reclaiming Kin had a great post recently called New Finds and Acts of Kindness that reminded me to check out the great databases at Familysearch.org.   Specifically, the database of Tennessee Deaths and Burials, 1874-1955 looked intriguing, as my wife has many CUMMINGS ancestors in Tennessee that I need to update more information on.

Right off the bat, I found new information in this database.  I entered the name of my wife's paternal great-grandfather, Wyatt CUMMINGS, and received a hit.  Dora Ann NEEDHAM, a female who died July 29, 1940 in Dyersburg, Dyer County, Tennessee had listed her parents as Wyatt CUMMINGS and Margaret HINSON (My records had listed her surname as HENSON).  Her birth was listed July 29, 1869 in Franklin County, Alabama.  This matches up with information that for Wyatt and Margaret's daughter, Dora Ann CUMMINGS, although the last "good" record I had for her was the 1870 census of Colbert County, Alabama.  Another researcher had given me information stating that she had died in 1927, and that she was married to Paul TILLEY.  Though she may have married Mr. TILLEY, she was apparently still alive until 1940, and was married to a Washa NEEDHAM.  Another surname to search.

What sort of name is Washa?  An abbreviation for Washington?  I believe so, as I searched the same database for him and found two hits for children of Wash NEEDHAM: Beadie L. NEEDHAM, born March 7, 1908 in Tennessee and died November 4, 1917 in Dyer County, Tennessee; and Ophline (NEEDHAM) HARRISON, born March 29, 1910 in Tennessee and died September 28, 1931 in Dyersburg, Dyer County, Tennessee.  Ophline death record listed her mother as "Tillie", perhaps this refers to Dora's 1st marriage to a TILLEY.

Digging further, I found Dora TILLIE, living in the household of Margaret CUMMINDS (love this spelling) in the 1900 census of Civil District 7, Dyer County, Tennessee.  Margaret, a widow, was listed as the mother of 15 children, 11 of whom were living.  Previously, I only knew of 13 children, so that means there must be 2 more out there.  Her husband, Wyatt, had died in 1890.  Notice the spelling of her son, Wyatt, as "WAIT", which if you sound it out with a Southern accent, I can see.

Margaret, as head of household, was born January 1843 and was 57 years of age, listed as being born in Tennessee, could not read or write.  Two children living with her were Prince and Wait (Wyatt), ages 22 and 18, respectively.  Also in the household are Dora TILLIE, born January 1875, age 24, and her 2 daughters, Ida and Rosy, ages 6 and 4, respectively. On the next page is another daughter, Annie, aged 2.

I believe that the John TILLEY, with wife Martha, listed a few households down on this second image are the same John TILLEY who married Martha Elleny CUMMINGS, daughter of Wyatt and Margaret (HENSON) CUMMINGS.  Will need to do more research on this family as well.

In just a few minutes, I had several new leads and possible relatives to track down.  Thanks to Familysearch.org and the plug of a fellow geneablogger.

Census Visited Today

My house had a visitor from the 2010 Census today, even though we had mailed back our form on April 12th.  They left a flyer inside our door.

I called the enumerator back and told her that I had already filled out the form.  I caught her at dinner, she told me she would call me back.  She asked my address and when I told her, she asked if we had picked up the form from the post office.  I told her yes.

She told me she would have to call me back and ask some questions, even though I had filled out the form.  Hmmm...
