Census Visited Today
My house had a visitor from the 2010 Census today, even though we had mailed back our form on April 12th. They left a flyer inside our door.
I called the enumerator back and told her that I had already filled out the form. I caught her at dinner, she told me she would call me back. She asked my address and when I told her, she asked if we had picked up the form from the post office. I told her yes.
She told me she would have to call me back and ask some questions, even though I had filled out the form. Hmmm...

Spring Clean: Convicted of High Treason
I came across an old email I had saved from the NJGLOUCE-L Mailing List at Rootsweb from 2004 that mentioned a relative, Jonathan CHEW. Jonathan was the son of Jeffrey and Amy (DRIVER) CHEW, and was my paternal 6th-great granduncle.
Printed in the New Jersey Gazette of Trenton, December 16, 1778 was a notice from the Courts of Oyer and Terminer and General Gaol Delivery for the county of Gloucester, which opened on November 17th and closed December 5th 1778. Jonathan CHEW was listed among several other men who were convicted of high treason and sentenced to death.
The email mentions that his property was later confiscated because he had joined the army of the King of Great Britain. The email references the On-Line Institute for Advanced Loyalist Studies.
Jonathan CHEW was born 1733 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. He married Mary SWEETEN, daughter of Andrew and Rebecca (________) SWEETEN. Jonathan died in 1799. Jonathan served as a captain in the loyalist forces. Apparently, he was later pardoned by the governor. More research needs to be done on this interesting time period in the CHEW family of New Jersey.

He left the enemy after they had retreated through Jersey, and came home and threw himself in the way of justice"Jonathan was a brother to my Jesse CHEW, a Methodist circuit rider, who also had Loyalist leanings, and his home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

They had 14 children and lived in Salem, Virginia. Ann died in 1820. Nathan died before October 17, 1814 in Salem, Virginia.
My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Amanda MOULTON, was born on this date in 1802. Amanda was the daughter of John and Avis (HURLBUT) MOULTON, and the younger sister of my Selah MOULTON. Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Malinda Lynn HEATON, married on this date in 1852 in Brown County, Ohio to Jasper STRATTON. Malinda was the daughter of James R. and Elizabeth (JACOBS) HEATON, and the older sister of my Rebecca HEATON. Malinda was born May 7, 1834 in Brown County, Ohio. Jasper was born in 1834 in Brown County, Ohio. Malinda died May 7, 1915 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Nothing further is known at this time.
My maternal 6th-great granduncle, John NOSLER, married on this date in 1792 in Montgomery County, Virginia to Mary WYLE. John was the son of Bostin and Sophia (________) NOSLER, and the older brother of my Conrad NOSLER. I do not have the dates of birth or death, nor parentage for Mary. John was born circa 1768 and died between 1836 and 1837 in Putnam County, Indiana. Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 3rd-great grandparents, Edmund G. PIERCE and Catherine GROENENDYKE, were married on this date in 1864 in Madison County, Indiana. Edmund was the son of Francis S. and Rebecca (PAGE) PIERCE. Catherine was the daughter of Elias and Nancy (JENKINS) GROENENDYKE. Edmund was born April 30, 1837 in Wayne County, Indiana. Catherine was born on February 4, 1843 in Madison County, Indiana. They had 5 children and lived in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana where Edmund was a farmer. Edmund died January 8, 1875 in Madison County, Indiana. Catherine died December 10, 1913 in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana. Both are buried in the Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.

Jay County (IN) Journal : May 2010
Yesterday, I received the latest Jay County Journal, the newsletter of the Jay County Historical Society. Once again, my membership in this society was rewarded with a few tidbits in their newsletter to add to my research.
One of the articles in the newsletter was about common school graduations. Not only did I learn some interesting facts about how common schools operated in the State of Indiana and in Jay County, but the newsletter published a few older programs from school graduations.
Because of this publication, I discovered that in 1911, my paternal 2nd-great granduncle, Dr. W.A. CHEW, was the president of the Salamonia Board of Education. William Anderson CHEW was a local doctor in Salamonia for many years, but I didn't realize he was also involved with the schools of the area. Glancing over the list of names of the graduates from the various townships and towns that year, I noticed his son, Forest CHEW, was listed as a graduate from Salamonia.
The newsletter also published the 1915 program, and my paternal grandaunt, Clara Elnora HALEY, was listed as a graduate from Noble Township.
There were many other names mentioned that seemed familiar, and I will need to examine the newsletter further for more clues.
It is so nice to have this society publish this type of information. Even though the clues didn't solve any mysteries, they add to overall picture of the family and make the ancestors more 'real'.

Charles Wilson LAMBERTSON (1872-1958) was my maternal 2nd-great grandfather. The LAMBERTSON line has origins stretching back into Sussex/Warren County, New Jersey area around 1800.

Larry Dee LeMASTER is buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. Larry was my second cousin.
Larry was born June 8, 1949 in Jay County, Indiana, the son of John Leland and Helen Eileen (PEASE) LeMASTER.
Larry married Doris Jean SHREEVES on August 31, 1968. They had 3 children.
Larry died February of 1974.

Spring Clean: Contract for purchase of Wright home, Alexandria Indiana
This document is the contract between my maternal great-grandparents, Virgil and Edna (PIERCE) WRIGHT, to purchase the home at 610 West Broadway in Alexandria, Indiana described in an earlier post.
Transcription:
WHEREAS, Virgil L. Wright and wife entered into a contract with Virgil O. Christensen and wife, for the purpose of purchasing lot numbered two hundred thirty-two (232) in the Alexandria Land and Title Gas Company's First Addition to the town, now City of Alexandria, Indiana, at and for the sum of Three Thousand ($3000.00) Dollars.
AND WHEREAS there is a balance due the Lincoln Loan Mortgage Company on said real estate of about Two Thousand Thirty-Two Dollars Sixty-Five Cents ($2032.65), and there is an abstract fee of $3.50, agency sale bill of $90.00, attorney's fee of $2.00, stamp for deed of $3.30, [handwritten] and $0.15 telephone to Anderson [end handwritting]
AND WHEREAS the abstract shows that there is a delinquency for 1939 taxes of $13.65 and a penalty of $1.78
AND WHEREAS it is desirable for the parties to close this transaction as soon as possible, and the said Wright is securing a loan in the Alexandria Banking Company, which cannot be closed before March, 27, 1942,
NOW THEREFORE, it is agreed by the parties hereto that said deed and papers shall be turned over to the Alexandria Banking Company by the said Christensen, and that the said Wright shall pay the said Christensen Six Hundred Fifty ($650.00) Dollars on said sales contract, making a total payment of Seven Hundred Fifty ($750.00) Dollars, thus leaving a balance due of about $217.35
NOW THEREFORE, said parties instruct the Alexandria Banking Company to make said settlement and to satisfy said delinquent tax lien, the cost of the abstract, the agency sale bill, the stamp for the deed, the attorney fees and all other items herein set forth, and to pay the balance to Virgil O. Christensen and wife, and to deliver said deed to the said Wright and all other papers to the parties entitled thereto.
Dated at Alexandria, Indiana, this 26th day of March, 1942.

What I learned from this document: I learned not only the name of the party that the home was purchased from, but the fact that Virgil was taking out a loan with the Alexandria Banking Company. That means that there should be a mortgage record on file with the Madison County Recorder's office - another record to search. The date of this transaction, March 1942, just after World War II started and right at the time of the birth of my uncle, Terry. Perhaps Virgil and Edna were buying this home because they wanted to help my grandparents have a place to come home to after the war. These purchase documents do contradict the family story I was told that my grandparents bought the house without any help from Virgil and Edna. Another benefit is that I have a copy of my great-grandfather's signature!
