Wading Into the Big Pond with AncestryDNA

I finally took the plunge into the 3rd of the major players in the DNA field and submitted a test to AncestryDNA.  I'd already tested at both 23andMe and FamilytreeDNA.  Between those two, I probably have enough data to keep me busy for years, but by testing with Ancestry, I will be fishing in the pond with the largest pool of fellow testers.

For a comparison of how the various autosomal DNA testing companies break down, please see the chart at the International Society of Genetic Genealogy Wiki.  They rate Ancestry's DNA users as having a medium response rate and a medium level of genealogical knowledge.  The worst response rate was from 23andMe and I managed to have pretty good results before they changed their setup.  I like how FamilyTreeDNA is set up, but they only have about 150,000 testers versus the 1 million at Ancestry.  So I'm definitely stepping into the big pond.

I'm looking forward to finding even more relatives and hopefully break down some brick walls.

Mom's Patriot Ancestors

Another one of my genealogy goals for 2016 includes working towards documenting descent for admission into heredity societies.  For instance, mom had recently asked if it was possible to prove descent for her to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).  We have those patriot ancestors, but it will just be a matter of documentation.

In order to facilitate the process, I went to the DAR's website and their Patriot Ancestor search engine, searching for individuals in mom's line that might have been recognized as Patriots.  I was able to locate several ancestors.  There may be more that have served but aren't recognized yet, but I wanted to start with the lines that were already recognized and prove descent from them.

Shaky Leaves : Richard Alderman household, 1870 census Madison County, Indiana

Working through more of the shaky leaf hints at Ancestry.com for my LeMaster & Allied Families Tree and updated the record of the 1870 census in Richland Township, Madison County, Indiana for my maternal 4th-great grandfather, Richard Alderman and his family.

1870 US Census, Madison County, Indiana, population schedule, Richland Township, page 25, dwelling 165, family 165, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 20 December 2015); National Archives, Washington, D.C..

Richard was enumerated as "R. Alderman", a 60 year old toll gate operator, born in Kentucky.  He was a U.S. citizen and the value of his personal estate was $350.  Though relationship were not specified in 1870, the other members of the household are known to be his children, his wife having died.

Members of the household include Washington Alderman, a 32 year old farmhand, born in Indiana; Susan Alderman, a 23 year old house keeper born in Indiana; Minter Alderman, a 20 year old farm hand born in Indiana; and N. J., a 17 year old farm hand born in Indiana who had attended school within the year.

So far, this is the last record I have located for Richard.  His wife sometime between 1860-1870.  I don't know much about the family, other than Washington was a Civil War veteran.

If you are related to this family in any way, I would love to hear from you.

Shaky Leaves : Thomas Crane household, 1930 census Johnson County, Indiana

Found the 1930 census record of the family of my maternal 2nd-great granduncle and family, Thomas Franklin Crane in the 1930 census of Edinburgh, Johnson County, Indiana through Ancestry.com's hints on my LeMaster & Allied Family Tree.

1930 US Census, Johnson County, Indiana, population schedule, Edinburgh, enumeration district (ED) 41-1, SD 11, sheet 17A, dwelling 454, family 461, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 3 January 2016); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
Thomas was a widower, his wife Mary Florence (Gilliland) Crane having died in 1924 in Monroe County, Indiana.  In 1930, he was enumerated as a Retail merchant, running a grocery, and rented his home for $ 11 per month.  His age was 59, born in Indiana, as were his parents.

Listed in the household were his daughters, Georgiana, age 18; Grace, age 16; Dorothy, age 13; Mary, age 11; and Louise, age 9; all born in Indiana.

Prior to this find, I did not realize that the family had moved from Monroe County over to Johnson County, or that he was involved in the grocery business.

If you have any additional information about this family, I would love to hear from you.

DNA : McMillen line

Uploaded the DNA results of Eileen's mother and brother Curt to GEDMatch and was quickly contacted by DNA researcher Retta, who noted the connection and wanted to know the relationships.  I'm worked with Retta before on the McMillen line out of Marshall County, Indiana.

Will continue to working with Retta and the other McMillen researchers to see if we can make the connections.

Shaky Leaves : Grace Lucille Crane Balser (1914-1996)

I located the FindAGrave memorial for Grace Lucille (Crane) Balser (1914-1996), my maternal first cousin 3 times removed, thanks to a hint from Ancestry.com.   Grace was the daughter of Thomas Franklin and Mary Florence (Gilliland) Crane.

Her memorial contained an obituary, which helps confirm the relationship and gives additional information about her daughter and her occupation.  In addition, this find allowed me to locate her husband's memorial as well.

Prior to this find, I did not have the name of Grace's spouse or her death date and location.

If you have any additional information on this family, I would love to hear from you.

Crane obits ordered

Ordered two more obituaries from the Monroe County Public Library. They have been very fast in the past and the convenience of paying via PayPal is a plus.

The obituaries I requested were for my maternal 2nd-great grandaunt and uncle, Thomas Franklin & Mary Florence (Gilliland) Crane.

Mary Florence's obituary appeared in the May 7, 1924 edition of the Bloomington Telephone.  She was only 36 years old.

Thomas' obituary appeared in the August 16, 1948 edition of Bloomington World-Telephone.  He was 76 years old.

I will be interested to see what, if any, additional clues will come from these obituaries.

Shaky Leaves : Thomas Crane household, 1910 census Monroe County, Indiana

Found the 1910 census record of my maternal 2nd-great grandaunt and uncle, Thomas F. and Mary Florence (Gilliland) Crane in the 1910 census of Bloomington Township, Monroe County, Indiana through Ancestry.com's hints on my LeMaster & Allied Family Tree.

1910 US Census, Monroe County, Indiana, population schedule, Bloomington Township, enumeration district (ED) 126, SD 2, sheet 2B, dwelling 34, family 34, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 3 January 2016); National Archives, Washington, D.C..

Thomas was listed as a 32 year old married farmer, who had been married twice, married for four years this marriage.  He was born in Indiana, his father was born in Indiana and his mother was born in Kentucky.  He could read and write and spoke English.  His wife, Mary, was 23 years old and was the mother of 2 children, both living.  She was born in Indiana, her father was born in Kentucky and her mother born in Indiana.  No occupation was listed, and she could read and write and speak English.

Children listed in the household were Millard, age 6, born in Indiana; Martha E., age 3, born in Indiana; and Hellen, aged 6 months, born in Indiana.  Also living in the household was Thomas' brother, Horace E. Crane, aged 33, born in Illinois, a farmer.

Before I had located this record, I did not realize that Thomas had been previously married.  From checking with cousin Judy, I learned that his first wife's name was Bertha Brummett and she died a few years after their marriage.

If you have any additional information on this family, I would love to hear from you.

DNA : Aunt Ruby's Ethnicity Results

Back in November, I wrote about awaiting the DNA results from my oldest maternal relative, my great-aunt Ruby.  Her results have come back and below are the ethnicity estimates from FamilyTreeDNA.

Ruby's ethnicity came back 97% European and 2% Middle Eastern.  The Middle Eastern portion came from Asia Minor (Turkey).

I realize that these ethnicity results are dependent on the self-reporting of the data pool, I do find them interesting.  My guess is that the portion from Turkey is from her maternal grandfather - who is as yet unknown.  This could explain the dark hair, dark eyes and features that appear to resemble the "mystery man" photo.  More tests will have to be done on other family members to see where they compare.

For the European ethnicity, the Eastern Europe portion has not shown up in the known paper trail DNA, though there is much of Ruby's paternal ancestry that remains unknown.  The maternal lines include much of the British Isles.

How does this compare with my ethnicity from FamilyTreeDNA?

A little less Middle Eastern, but overall, similar results that I would expect from being a generation removed.

I've already reached out to two of my first cousins, who come from this same line.  Will compare these results and be able to track exactly what DNA we share from our common ancestors.  Then, hopefully, I can triangulate with others who match us and find common ancestors to break down the brick walls.

LeMaster Cousins Gather

Yesterday, my mom & dad went to Portland and met with some of dad's cousins who were getting together to start off the New Year.  Unfortunately, I couldn't make it, but I was glad that they were able to go and talk about family history.

According to dad, it was a good visit, a lot of catching up over the years and sharing of some family stories and history.  A copy of some of the research that had been compiled (some from this blog) was given to them and now I have contact information to follow up and hopefully share some more research.

Here are a couple pictures that were taken.

L-R: Leland LeMaster, Weldon LeMaster, Doug LeMaster, Kay Addington, Gary LeMaster

The above is a picture of my dad with his first cousins' once removed, the children of John Leland and Helen Eileen (Pease) LeMaster.  Missing from the group was Terry, who was ill, and Larry, who passed in 1974.  Dad is also related to these brothers & sisters through their mother, Helen, who is a Wehrly descendant.  On that line they are third cousins twice removed to my dad.

Ann (LeMaster) Monger
Also at the gathering was Ann, who is my dad's first cousin, the daughter of John Leland & Dortha LeEtta (DeLauter) LeMaster.  She is the aunt of the group assembled above.

Hopefully the next time I am able to get over to the Portland area we can arrange to meet and maybe share some pictures, etc.  Once the weather warms in the spring I have plans to make some stops over there to the historical society and the courthouse.

Obituary : Peter Swafford, September 9, 1885, Republican Progress, Bloomington, Indiana

Thanks to the folks at the Monroe County, Indiana Public Library, I was able to obtain a copy of the obituary of my maternal 4th-great grandfather, Peter Kirkpatrick Swafford (1827-1885).  The obituary appeared in the September 9, 1885 edition of the Republican Progress in Bloomington, Indiana.

Peter Swafford, who lived on the hill (at Spencer) near Henry Keenes, died one day last week and was taken to Monroe county near Stinesville for burial.

That's not much of an obituary, but it does let me know that he was buried near Stinesville in Monroe County, even though he died in Owen County.  I have not yet located his burial location.

Peter was born June 12, 1827 in Mississippi and married April 3, 1853 in Owen County, Indiana to Mary Ann Crockett (1835-1865).

Cousin bait : LaMaster

Just received an email from a LaMaster, trying to find out how we are connected.  Wrote him back and asked for as much information he has tracing his line back, so I can compare notes and see if I can find the line in the books I have on the family.  Spelling variations aside, if we are related, it's likely pretty distant.

The branches I'm aware of that spell the name LaMaster from the "Lemasters USA" book by Howard Lemaster would be at least 5th or more distant cousins, provided I can find the link of my branch in to those lines.

I'm still working on the paper trail to that line, hoping to save my money and do a Y-DNA test to connect to others who have a better paper trail.

This blog continues to be good 'cousin bait' with people finding me and reaching out.

LeMaster Aunts & Uncles

My paternal LeMaster aunts & uncles (dad's brothers and sisters) gathered together on New Year's Day and my mom shared the following photographs with me.  All taken at Ruth & Doug's in Sheridan, Indiana.

New Year, New Hope

Today is the start of the new year and for many, the start of new resolutions for the coming year.  For those doing genealogy, the start of the new year always brings hope of finding new ancestors and making new discoveries about the family.

For my part, yesterday i spent my Christmas money (thank you - mother in law!) on two items that I hope will add to my knowledge of family. One was a book, the other was a DNA test kit.

The book was from the Seventh Day Baptist organization, entitled "Newport Seventh Day Baptist Trilogy" by Don and Ilou Sanford.  Many of my ancestors were founders and members of this church and denomination, and i'm interested in finding out what the book has to say about the early days of the church and my ancestors.  The price was right and the description seems interesting:

Part I “Entering Into Covenant” is a documented history of the church including its founding, its meeting house, and the impact of some its its members in colonial history. Part II lists the members of the church from its founding in 1671 until its closing in 1884. Part III is a genealogical study of the descendents of Samuel and Tacy Hubbard through their three daughters, 24 grandchildren and two successive generation beyond.

The other item I purchased yesterday was a DNA test kit from Ancestry.com.  The sale price was too good to pass up and the number of people who have tested their continues to grow.  Once I complete this test, I will have tested at all three of the major providers : 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA and Ancestry.  I am eager to see what new connections I will make.  I'll admit that I had held off on testing there before because of the lack of a chromosome browser, but with third party tools such as GEDMatch I'm sure I can work through it.

Last week I was also able to send off two DNA test kits to my first cousins who are going to complete FamilyTreeDNA kits.  I continue to save my pennies and add them to my DNA funds so I can sponsor kits for cousins that will be wiling to test.

In other items, I do have plans to try to post more family information to this blog and share some more pictures that I recently came across.
