Is There A Doctor In Your House?

Did you know the AMA (American Medical Association) maintained a database of deceased physicians?  The AMA Deceased Physicians Card File developed out of an attempt by the AMA to keep a reliable directory of physicians in the United States.  Up until 1969, the staff maintained over 350,000 of these physician index cards and after that date began entering the information into a computer database.  In 1993, two volumes of these cards were published as Directory of Deceased American Physicians 1804-1929.

The database is searchable at Ancestry.  Knowing that I had a few physicians in my family, I decided to see what I could find.

Dr. William Anderson CHEW (1858-1914) was a physician of Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana and my paternal 2nd-great granduncle.  He was found in the database, though they have him indexed as William H. CHEW.

I did not find an entry for his father, Dr. Ezekiel Cooper CHEW (1822-1888), who also practiced in Salamonia.

Jethro Ayres HATCH (1836-1912), my maternal cousin 5 times removed, was a graduate of Rush Medical College and practiced in Indiana and Illinois before retiring to Texas.

Abraham Leander SHERICK, my paternal 2nd-great granduncle, practiced in Ashland, Ohio and founded his own private hospital.  He interned at Bellevue Hospital in New York and attended Baldwin University.

Funeral Record : Frank Haley (1937)

Source: Frank Haley Funeral Record, Baird Funeral Home, Jay Co., Indiana,  1937, Saxman & Schindler, comp., n.d.
Another good find for me at the Jay County Historical Society library was the funeral record of Andrew Frank HALEY, brother of my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, Eli Weldon HALEY.  Prior to this find, I knew that Frank, as he was known, had died in 1937, and that he was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Fort Recovery, Ohio.  Now that I had the funeral record, I have a few more tidbits.

According to the record, Frank died July 29, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois.  What was he doing there?  His son, Clarence O. HALEY, was a physician there.  Services for Frank were held at Mt. Zion church in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, with burial in Fort Recovery, Ohio.  The funeral record gives his parents as Geo. W. HALEY and Mary Jane SHERICK, as well as he being a widower of Emma LEONARD.

I was unable to locate the death record on Ancestry.com in the Cook County death database.  However, at the FamilySearch.org site, I located his death record.  He didn't die in Chicago, but instead in Oak Park.

Andrew Frank HALEY was born March 4, 1864 in Ashland County, Ohio, the oldest child of George Washington and Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY.  He married November 3, 1887 in Jay County, Indiana to Emma Catherine LEONHARD (1866-1925).

Baby Steps: My Ancestry.com Family Tree

LeMaster Family Tree on Ancestry.com
I've taken some baby steps and created a family tree on Ancestry.com.  I've been a member of Ancestry for quite some time, but didn't have my own family tree posted there. At one time I had uploaded my entire GEDCOM database, but I soon deleted it as it was unwieldy.  Now I'm working on creating my tree one branch at a time, working to have the best information, sources and photos possible.  My id on Ancestry is tjlgenes.

The process of creating a tree at Ancestry is very easy and straight-forward.  Even though privacy of living individuals is assured, I decided to input myself and my parents as simply Living, along with the surname and no dates.

I've resisted the urges to click on the little green leaves that give "hints" because right now I know these individuals pretty well and doubt there will be anything new in the hints.  As I add information further back, or add my wife's line, I will probably look at them more closely.  Already, I've received emails from Ancestry suggesting census records, etc. to link with my great-grandparents.  I haven't yet done that, but will once I enter all of the facts and provide the source material.

I've been trying to locate photos of each of my direct line to add to the family tree as well.  Doing this has been an eye-opener, as I've finding out that I didn't have as many photos of some branches of the tree as I thought.

Right now, the tree only has my direct line back to my great-great grandparents.  Surnames include: LeMaster(s), Chew, Wehrly, Smith, Haley, Sherrick, Metzner, Moulton, Wright, King, Pierce, Penisten, Lambertson, Beals and Davis.

In addition to this mini-tree, I have my entire database backed-up as on WorldConnect at database tjlgenes.

1897 Directory : Portland, Indiana

My dad has been "downsizing" a bit here recently and has been giving me family history items and other ephemera that I'm in the process of scanning, extracting and posting to the blog.  Using my new Flip-Pal scanner, I'm posting here some family I've found in the 1897 Directory of Portland, Indiana.  Dad's copy is the 1982 reprint, and it is still available for purchase for $5.00 (a steal!) from the Jay County Historical Society.

As I went through the directory, I scanned pages that contained surnames of interest in my research.

The Arthur E. Graves listed here with wife Carrie is the only one that is known to be family, but I've included the others in case someone else knows them.  Arthur was married to Carrie Mae HALEY, daughter of George W. and Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY.  Carrie was my great-grandaunt.  She and Arthur were married in 1895 in Jay County.

There were several HALEY families listed in the directory, but the only one I know for sure is my family is Ora HALEY, listed as being of school age, living at 289 Robert Huey.  She is the sister of Carrie GRAVES (above), and living in the same household.  There were multiple HALEY families in Portland, and I've yet to sort them all out.

The Mary J. KIMBLE listed here is my paternal 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY KIMBLE, who was widowed and remarried in May of 1897 to Robert KIMBLE.  Why Robert is not listed in this directory, I'm not sure.  I do not know if the other KIMBLEs listed are of his family.

Notice that Mary KIMBLE, Ora HALEY and Arthur & Carrie GRAVES were all living together at 289 Robert Huey.  Today, this street does not exist.  According to the street cross reference, Robert Huey was Meridian extended, from Votaw to North Corporate line.  Today this is all part of Meridian street.

I've yet to identify which PETRY family that Stella belongs with; another avenue of research.

The J.W. Wehrly listed here was John William WEHRLY, son of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY.  John was my paternal great-granduncle.  Later in the directory, the surname is spelled alternatively as Wherley.
